Mrs Wood from Glassford, near Strathaven emailed us to ask.
How should i care for my wool blend carpet ?
We work with clients in Strathaven on a regular basis, cleaning and maintaining carpets and upholstery for a number of customers around South Lanarkshire.
At Alba Floor Care we love to receive questions from our customers. We always do our best to answer your queries.
Wool is a beautiful material for carpet construction. It has some qualities that are ideal for a lush, warm carpet. For instance, wool is an excellent insulator, so warm toasty flooring is guaranteed,
However there are some other qualities of wool which make it less than suitable as a floor covering. Wool is extremely absorbent, not ideal for a floor covering where liquids may be spilled on the floor.
Some of the more undesirable qualities can be overcome by adding a little synthetic material into the mix.
Thats the reason that most mid to high range Wool carpets normally contain a blend of around 05% to 30% synthetic material.
The most popular mix in terms of actual carpet sales in the UK is an 80% / 20% blend.
A wool carpet, or wool blend carpet can become dirty and damaged far quicker than a synthetic carpet. The reason for this is the nature of the wool fibre, which can hide dirt more effectively by trapping it into the wool fibres, where it begins to wear down the fibre by gentle abrasion. After time this abrasive action causes the carpet to wear and tear prematurely.
This can be avoided by making sure you vacuum the carpet regularly.
Daily vacuuming is recommended to remove the trapped dirt and to stop it building up to levels where damage will occur.
When vacuuming your carpet it is important to thoroughly cover all the carpeted areas. Choose an upright vacuum cleaner with a rotary brush cleaning head, this will provide agitation to the carpet surface knocking any dirt loose from the surface pile. We are often asked what vacuum cleaner we recommend. For professional carpet cleaners
The second tip we recommend for getting the most out of your wool carpe or floor covering, is how to assemble a clean up kit to deal with any unexpected stains or spills.
The reason for this is wool is naturally absorbent, so when you spill liquids on the floor and don’t clean it up correctly then there is a chance the carpet may stain.
The good news is it’s simply to care for your wool carpet if you have a few items to hand to deal with any spills or marks as they occur.
At Alba Floor Care, Our professional carpet cleaning technicians always carry a carpet spill pack.
Consisting of a few white cotton terry towels, a spray bottle with plain water, and a bottle of our free carpet and upholstery, spot and stain remover.
Blot, don’t rub
When any spillage occurs on your carpet the most important thing to remember is to treat it immediately, chances are the liquid will pool in the surface of the carpet giving you vital time to grab your clean up kit.
Use a clean dry terry towel to blot up as much of the liquid as possible, using a dabbing motion keep patting the spill until there is no more moisture transferring across from the carpet onto the towel.
Now using your spray bottle, filled with clean, fresh water, mist the area where the spillage occurred. repeat the dabbing motion with your terry towel until the residue has been removed from the carpet also. If there are any marks left over, using our professional carpet and upholstery stain remover will remove the residue without causing damage to your carpet.
Our cleaning solution is eco friendly, We chose it as it’s safe to use around children and pets, it does not require rinsing and it removes 99% of water based stains and marks from the carpet without the use of bleaches of enzymes.
If you have a mark or stain on your wool carpet and you just can’t shift it, call Alba Floor Care today on 0800 788 0615 to arrange a free quote for your carpet cleaning or upholstery cleaning requirements.

We were sad to say goodbye to a long term client at 180 St Vincent Street earlier this year. Yell.com, A.k.a. HIBU, Has left Glasgow for good, moving operations across to Belfast.
We cleaned the office carpets for the last time this week, We look forward to welcoming in the new tenants of 180 St Vincent
If you are using the latter then you may find your carpets will stay cleaner for longer if you switch over to an upright style vacuum with a beater bar ( the brush that spins on the bottom)
The reason for the brush isn’t just to catch and scrape the surface of the carpet, the brush is actually beating on the carpet, releasing trapped dirt as it passes over the carpet surface. When we are cleaning any carpets the first part of the process is to vacuum the full area.
Why we vacuum so much?
We spend much longer than any sane person would spend working our way over the carpet, back and forward, north to south then east to west. The reason for this is in the construction of the carpet and the way it is designed to trap and hold dust. To remove the maximum amount of dry soil we really need to vacuum for at least 10 minutes per small room, sometimes even 15 or 20 minute depending on the depth of the pile.
We have had customers comment time and time again that the carpets look much cleaner already and all we have done is give the place a really intense vacuum.
If your thinking that we are using some special, high tech, fancy vacuum cleaner…. You would be wrong.
We use the industry standard Vacuum for carpet cleaners, hospitals, nursing homes, hotels… the list is endless.
The SEBO BS36
This is a german built workhorse of a vacuum, fully serviceable and easy to clean after every use. It makes my job as a carpet cleaner so much easier.
If you are considering a new vacuum in the near future, give it a try. You wont regret it.
Steam cleaning and sterilisation service now available.
Ok, Im very excited while writing this post, we have just taken delivery of our new industrial steam cleaning machine from the KS group all the way over in Italy.
Why did we choose a company from Italy to provide our steam cleaning equipment, well thats simple. The KS group manufactures the most high quality steam sterilisation equipment in Europe if not the world. Their machines are used in hospitals, kitchens, laboratories and much more all over Europe. And now they are used by us. http://www.ksgsteamdivision.com/eng/
The use of high powered steam has replaced a majority of the cleaning chemicals used in these locations and made a much safer and cleaner environment possible. Infection control is carried out using super heated steam which can penetrate into every nook and cranny, destroying bacteria and viruses on contact.
Super heated steam also cleans really really well. We offer oven cleaning across Glasgow already, now we will be putting our new baby to the test. Oven cleaning has always been a dirty job, someone has to do it and it might as well be done properly. We carry out our oven cleaning service without the use of harsh chemicals in your home. Your oven is left as good as new with every last drop of grime and filth removed.
Ok back to our new machine.
It has the ability to heat water way past it’s boiling point, all the way up to 170 degrees, the resulting steam produced is not like stem from your kettle or a pot of boiling water, this is DRY steam, you can read more about it here courtesy of wikipedia.
Dry steam kills all known viruses and bacteria, if you think about it there is not much that can survive temps like these. So while cleaning and blasting dirt from the surfaces we are cleaning, we are also destroying all the bacteria and germs. The same cannot be said for chemical cleaners, when you use harmful chemicals you are doing more harm to yourself than your are to germs.
So, who will be the first customer to see the benefits from our new equipment. ???
Bothered by nasty cleaning chemicals in the home ??
I don’t know about you, but i don’t enjoy having a mini, chemical arsenal under my kitchen sink.
After an evenings TV viewing you begin to wonder how our parents and grand parents and all those before them survived. With complicated, chemical, cleaning, concoctions available for just about every inch of your home the question is, when did we become so dirty.
The truth is we didn’t
The dirty ones are the marketing companies and big chemical companies who need to to buy all this nasty stuff. And those slimy advertisers got really good at convincing us that there are germs lurking at every turn just waiting to lay you up with some nasty something or other.
The truth is humans in the developed western world presently live in the the most hygienic and sanitary living environments we have every occupied. There simply isn’t the need to take this already clean environment and ruin it by spraying chemical polishes, air fresheners, and various bleaches around the place. There are numerous studies and medical papers showing distinct and positive correlation between the increased use of chemicals in the home to increases in the levels and types of cancers being developed in the western world.
This is something i as a parent couldn’t ignore and as a business owner i feel a duty of care to my customers and to my employees to be using the safest and most eco friendly cleaning solutions throughout my company. From replacing a list of cleaning chemicals with our industrial steam generator to switching completely to Eco- friendly, plant derived carpet and upholstery cleaning solutions.
Every little bit we all do eventually snowballs and becomes a lot and we make the world a nicer, greener place to pass on to our children.
If you would like to try an eco friendly carpet cleaning company covering Glasgow, call Scotclean Solutions today. Our results will blow you away.
