How should I care for my wool blend carpet when it gets stained or I spill liquids ?

We work with residential customers across Glasgow, sometimes we travel a little further.  We clean carpets in air b n b properties for  clients in Strathaven on a regular basis, cleaning and maintaining carpets and upholstery for a number of customers around South Lanarkshire.

Wool is a beautiful material for carpet construction. It has some qualities that are ideal for a lush, warm carpet. For instance, wool is an excellent insulator, so warm toasty flooring  is guaranteed,

However there are some other qualities of wool which make it less than suitable as a floor covering. Wool is extremely absorbent, not ideal for a floor covering where liquids may be spilled on the floor.

Some of the more undesirable qualities can be overcome by adding a little synthetic material into the mix.

Thats the reason that most mid to high range Wool carpets normally contain a blend of around 05% to 30% synthetic material.

The most popular mix in terms of actual carpet sales in the UK is an 80% / 20% blend.

Wool carpets differ from synthetic carpets in the ways we recommend you care for your carpet.

Our first tip on how to care for wool carpets is…

Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum.

The reason for this is the nature of the wool fibre, which can hide dirt more effectively by trapping it into the wool fibres, where it begins to wear down the fibre by gentle abrasion. After time this abrasive action causes the carpet to wear and tear prematurely.

This can be avoided by making sure you vacuum the carpet regularly.

Daily vacuuming is recommended to remove the trapped dirt and to stop it building up to levels where damage will occur.

When vacuuming your carpet it is important to thoroughly cover all the carpeted areas. Choose an upright vacuum cleaner with a rotary brush cleaning head, this will provide agitation to the carpet surface knocking any dirt loose from the surface pile. The reason for this is wool is naturally absorbent, so when you spill liquids on the floor and don’t clean it up correctly then there is a chance the carpet may stain.

The good news is it’s simply to care for your wool carpet if you have a few items to hand to deal with any spills or marks as they occur.

Consisting of a few white cotton terry towels, a spray bottle with plain water, and a bottle of our free carpet and upholstery, spot and stain remover.

Blot, don’t rub

blot-carpet-stain with a cotton cloth to absorb all the excess liquidWhen any spillage occurs on your carpet the most important thing to remember is to treat it immediately, chances are the liquid will pool in the surface of the carpet giving you vital time to grab your clean up kit.

Use a clean dry terry towel to blot up as much of the liquid as possible, using a dabbing motion keep patting the spill until there is no more moisture transferring across from the carpet onto the towel.

Now using your spray bottle, filled with clean, fresh water, mist the area where the spillage occurred. repeat the dabbing motion with your terry towel until the residue has been removed from the carpet also. If there are any marks left over, using our professional carpet and upholstery stain remover will remove the residue without causing damage to your carpet.

Do you Vacuum your carpet on a daily basis? 

If you do, what type of vacuum are you using ?

Is it an upright? Or a Henry type with hose ? 

If you are using the latter then you may find your carpets will stay cleaner for longer if you switch over to an upright style vacuum with a beater bar ( the brush that spins on the bottom)

The reason for the brush isn’t just to catch and scrape the surface of the carpet, the brush is actually beating on the carpet, releasing trapped dirt as it passes over the carpet surface. When we are cleaning any carpets the first part of the process is to vacuum the full area.

Why we vacuum so much?

We spend much longer than any sane person would spend working our way over the carpet, back and forward, north to south then east to west. The reason for this is in the construction of the carpet and the way it is designed to trap and hold dust. To remove the maximum amount of dry soil we really need to vacuum for at least 10 minutes per small room, sometimes even 15 or 20 minute depending on the depth of the pile.

We have had customers comment time and time again that the carpets look much cleaner already and all we have done is give the place a really intense vacuum.

If your thinking that we are using some special, high tech, fancy vacuum cleaner…. You would be wrong.
